Dubbed the “Fight of the Century” Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier – both undefeated - squared off in Madison Square Garden on March 8th, 1971 for the Boxing Heavyweight Championship of the World. This was Ali’s first bid to recapture the title after having it stripped by the WBA four years earlier for his refusal to be inducted into the Armed Services. Those in attendance included Frank Sinatra, who photographed the fight for Life magazine – he couldn’t get a ringside seat – and Burt Lancaster – who called the fight with Don Dunphy. The bout lived up to expectations and went the distance with Frazier knocking Ali down in the 15th round. Smokin’ Joe retained the crown on a unanimous decision.
