Legitimizing the AFL, the New York Jets beat the Baltimore Colts (sorry) 16-7 in Super Bowl III – the first time the term “Super Bowl” was used - on January 12th, 1969 in Miami, Florida. The Colts – some claimed at the time the “best team ever” - were 19 point favorites but Jet’s QB Joe Namath became the Super Bowl epicenter after not only claiming his team would win – he “guaranteed it” - the rest is football history.
That the Colts couldn’t buy a break and that QB Earl Morrall threw 3 interceptions didn’t hurt the Jets’ chances either. Even a late 3rd Quarter appearance by Johnny Unitas didn’t work - Many of us wondering if Coach Don Shula’s change was too little too late. Namath went on to become a household name and the Colts went on and won Super Bowl V.For folks of my generation this is the first Super Bowl many of us remember and was just the beginning of all the “hoop-la” - Anita Bryant sang the National Anthem and Bob Hope hosted a pre-game ceremony honoring the Apollo Space Program. Note the date also – January 12th – I am firmly convinced that before I die the Super Bowl and Baseball’s Opening Day will be within the same week.
Below are a few clips – including an intro to the game – interesting.
