Professional boxer Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. was born on January 17th, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. With a professional record of 56-5, three Heavyweight championships and a gold medal from the 1960 Olympics there’s no question Ali was a great boxer. But he not only transcended boxing but also sports and for a very long time was – and maybe even today, is – one of the most recognizable humans on the globe.
I won’t try and recap his boxing career – I’ll leave that to my esteemed colleague – but even “non-fight fans” have an Ali memory. His classic bouts with Joe Frazier, knocking out George Foreman, his conversion to Islam, his refusal to be drafted in 1967 and subsequent loss of his Heavyweight crown because of this or his lighting of the Olympic Torch in Atlanta in 1996. Gloves on or off – and it’s debatable if Ali ever took them off – his legacy – and his courage – are always to be remembered.Add this page to your favorite Social Bookmarking websites
