Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery, the film Mr. & Mrs. Smith premiered on January 31st, 1941. This film is worth the viewing simply because it’s a screw-ball comedy ….directed by Alfred Hitchcock!
The plot is straightforward and maybe a dream come true for many married couples – Lombard asks her husband Montgomery if he had to do it all over again – would he marry her? Montgomery breaking every husband rule ever written – Does my butt look big in these jeans? Am I too fat for this dress? – answers honestly and says, “Nope”.Lo and behold that day Mr. and Mrs. Smith find out they aren’t legally married – and the hi-jinx begin. Being a Hitchcock movie there is some surreptitious stalking and a suspenseful scene atop a World’s Fair Ferris Wheel – but overall this is a very entertaining movie and obviously not of the Hitchcock norm. It’s also Lombard’s second to last movie – To Be or Not To Be with Jack Benny her final one. Lombard’s - Mrs. Clark Gable’s - death in a plane crash in 1942 cut short a film career and a very dynamic life that we only got a glimpse of.
