Musician and songwriter Peter Brian Gabriel was born on February 13th, 1950 in Chobham, Surrey, England. Gabriel was the lead vocalist and founding member of the band Genesis. For those of you who remember, Peter became well known for “dressing up” during the band’s performances – as a flower or an old man among other identities – and although the music is somewhat dated, pulling out the band’s Live album, Selling England by the Pound and especially The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is still worth the effort.
Gabriel left the band in 1975 – stunning fans at the time – to begin a solo career – his first solo hit “Solsbury Hill” was written specifically about his departure- and he never looked back. His first three albums were simply titled Peter Gabriel and are known by their covers – Car, Scratch and Melt. After changing labels – titles became part of the contract – and include Security, SO, Us and two live albums. Gabriel also wrote and released a soundtrack for Martin Scorsese’s film The Last Temptation of Christ.Gabriel’s music has always been difficult to categorize, for instance he has consistently sought out and incorporated artists and instruments from around the world and different cultures not normally associated with popular music. But at least for this listener that’s just one of the many reasons I still listen to Gabriel’s music on a regular basis.
