On February 27th, 1960 the U.S. Olympic hockey pulled a stunning upset and beat the Soviet Union 3-2 in the semi-finals in Squaw Valley, California – this is the Forgotten Miracle On Ice. The US team was made up of college players and amateurs and two sets of brothers – Bill and Bob Cleary and Bill and Roger Christian – Bill Christian’s son, David, was a member of the US 1980 hockey team. Their coach was Jack Riley, from West Point. In a twist of fate the last player cut from the team was Herb Brooks, who went on to coach the 1980 team.
A long shot if there ever was one, the U.S. team had beaten Czechoslovakia, Germany, Sweden, Australia and Canada before meeting the Soviets. They went on the next night to beat Czechoslovakia – again – and won the Gold Medal. See Al’s column for more details.
